Third “Riyazi” Student Event Held by the Department of Mathematics at University of Science and Technology of Mazandaran

The third edition of the “Riyazi” student event, organized by the Department of Mathematics at University of Science and Technology of Mazandaran (MAZUST), was held at the Faculty of Science, hosting 70 elementary school students from Behshahr with the participation of more than 20 undergraduate students from the Mathematics and Applications and Computer Science programs.
The event was managed and scientifically coordinated by Dr. Maria Afshari-Rad, faculty member of the Department of Mathematics. Referring to the particular circumstances in the country and students’ limited access to in-person education in recent months, she stated that the main objective was to provide children with an opportunity to return to a joyful, educational, and interactive environment, where they could engage in learning, play, and group activities alongside their peers.
The program was held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and consisted of two educational sessions featuring eight workshops designed for students at different elementary school levels. Each workshop was supervised by two student facilitators, with eight children divided into two four-member teams participating in educational and game-based activities.
Dr. Afshari-Rad explained that the event included mathematics and Persian language workshops tailored to students’ academic levels. Students were divided into groups of eight and attended one of the mathematics or Persian workshops during the first session. Following a refreshment break, the groups rotated between the workshops during the second session to benefit from both educational activities.
She added that all educational games used in the event were designed, tested, and finalized through several preparatory sessions by members of the Riyazi team. Some were developed through the team’s own creativity and ideas, while others were adapted from resources developed by reputable international institutions and localized for Iranian children.
Alongside the student workshops, two counseling sessions for parents were held. Dr. Hashemi Borzabadi, faculty member of the Department of Mathematics, and Dr. Shooleh Ataei, lecturer at MUST and Director of the Behshahr Mathematics House, presented specialized topics during the sessions.
At the conclusion of the event, certificates of participation were presented to all attendees. The Director of Education of Behshahr also attended the program, reviewed the activities firsthand, and emphasized the importance of continuing such initiatives to support student education and skills development.
